Spanish IUL Leads: Why He Started on $1 Aged Leads

Spanish IUL Leads: How a 3-Month Agent Built His Best Month

"Hello, Miss Betty…"

Then nothing. Frozen. Dead air on a recorded call his upline would later play back for him.

That was Leo Lopez in month one. One policy sold. He'd just quit a warehouse job at 3M in Illinois where working twice as hard as the guy next to him paid exactly the same, because that guy had a year more seniority.

Three months later, Leo is working Spanish IUL leads — aged and fresh, English and Spanish, mortgage and IUL — and sitting at $8,700 issue premium halfway through his best month yet.

Here's the part most new agents get backwards…

His upline deliberately refused to buy him good leads.

Not because of budget. On purpose. "Your skill set is at the lowest amount possible," Leo was told. "So we're buying you the $1 leads. The most aged ones we can find."

If you're three months in, or three years in and still burning fresh packs you're not skilled enough to work yet, this one's for you. We've helped 550+ agents hit $40,000+ issue-paid months over the past three and a half years, and the ones who get there fastest almost always build the same way Leo did: cheap reps first, premium lead flow second.

Let's hop right into it.

Why New Agents Should Build Skill on Aged Leads Before Fresh

Fresh is better. Leo says it himself — you're usually the first person that prospect has ever talked to, and most people buy from the first person they talk to.

So why not start there?

Because a brand new agent on a fresh pack is a guy holding a loaded opportunity he has no idea what to do with.

In Leo's words: they'll get pickups, those people might be ready to buy, and then something goes sideways in the conversation — and the agent doesn't know what to do. A thousand dollars of fresh leads gone. Not because the leads were bad. Because the skill wasn't there.

Aged leads throw more objections at you, and that's exactly the point — they're the batting cage, not the game.

Aged FEX runs $2.50. Aged veteran $3. Aged IUL $4. Aged mortgage protection $5. At those prices you can make 100 mistakes before lunch and it costs you less than one text-verified lead.

Then when you graduate to fresh? You're not learning anymore. You're converting. Same logic we break down in why new agents should only work aged leads.

Lead Flow Is Cash Flow: The Monday/Wednesday/Friday Structure

Leo's upline drilled one line into him: lead flow is cash flow.

Now that he has cash flow, he buys on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. But here's the mechanic worth stealing even if you're broke…

He buys a pack of 50 instant IUL leads at the start of the week. Those drip in over days — real-time leads don't all arrive at 9 a.m. Monday.

So while he waits, he's dialing a stack of 50 to 100 aged.

He never sits in dead air waiting for a fresh lead to land. The aged pack is what keeps the phone warm between fresh drops.

That's the real argument for mixing instead of picking a side. Fresh buys you intent. Aged buys you volume and reps. Together they keep a dialer producing all day — which is the whole case in our breakdown of the aged vs fresh middleground strategy.

And if you're brand new with limited money? Leo's answer is simple: buy one pack Monday and ration it across the week. Don't start the week with nothing to dial.

The Dial Cadence That Actually Gets Pickups

Leo's biggest early mistake: double dial, no answer, move on, forget the lead forever.

Here's the cadence he runs now on aged:

  • Once in the morning
  • Once in the afternoon
  • Once right before he shuts down for the day
  • Then again the next day — until he gets a human

On fresh he'll triple dial on arrival, then text: "Hey, this is Leo, the agent here in the office. I saw you just filled this out — when would be a good time to give you a call?"

A "no thanks" is a better outcome than a lead you never reached, because one of those is data and the other is a question you'll never get answered.

He doesn't use a dialer. Tried one, didn't feel it moved the needle for him. The cadence is doing the work, not the software.

Working Spanish IUL Leads: Energy, Rapport, and the "Why"

Ask Leo the difference between English and Spanish leads and he goes straight to tonality.

They can't see you. So the entire transfer is energy. Upbeat voice, warm open, fast rapport.

Then there's the part you can't fake. On one call Leo mentioned his parents came from Mexico — and the prospect lit up because his wife was from the same place. Game over. That's not a technique. That's shared ground.

Spanish-speaking clients are often dealing with a market where they don't have many resources, don't know many people, and a real number of them have been scammed before. Speaking their language installs trust before you've said anything about a product.

With Spanish IUL leads you're not selling the product — you're educating, and the product sells itself.

And the discovery lever Leo leans on hardest is the "why" field on the lead.

He can already see the answer on the spreadsheet. He asks anyway.

"What made you fill this out in the first place?"

Then he shuts up. Lets them ramble. If the answer comes back in two short sentences, he doubles down: "Tell me more."

Protect my family. Build tax-free income. That's the ammunition. You can't close an IUL on features — you close it on the reason they raised their hand, which is why we teach agents to pitch concepts, not numbers.

The Aged Intro That Flips the Script

On aged leads Leo doesn't open with "I see you filled out a form recently." He opens with:

"Somebody should have helped you out with this already, right?"

And on 45-to-90-day-old leads, a surprising number say: "No — you're the first person who's called me."

Some forgot they filled anything out. So he reminds them of their own why. Then cracks a joke — "who do I need to fire over here?" — and the call is warm.

Most agents work a fresh lead hard for two to three weeks, hit it once or twice, then move on to the new batch. That abandoned lead is somebody's next close. Ours, in fact — see why your old leads are someone else's aged leads.

The Trust Close: Face, Card, Screen Share

You can hear the hesitation before it happens. The application hits the part that asks for a Social Security number and the voice changes.

Leo's three moves, in order:

  1. Business card. Make one your first week — free, takes minutes. Send it before you need it.
  2. Face. "What kind of phone do you have? I can FaceTime you or send a Zoom link, so you can put a face behind the voice and I'm not a total stranger."
  3. Screen share. On WhatsApp video from a computer, share your screen and show them every field you're typing into the application.

Leo once walked a hesitant client around the office on video and showed him the actual application. Didn't close that one. Still ran the play — because showing your face is never the thing that costs you a deal, and sometimes it's the only thing that saves one.

After the close, he has them write down the policy number, sends a text with the premium, the draft date and his personal line, and says: "I appreciate you trusting me with this today. If you've got family or anyone else looking into this, send them my way."

The Trap: Staying on Aged Too Long

Here's the failure mode of all this advice.

Cheap leads are comfortable. They're also where plenty of agents park permanently, telling themselves they're still "building skill" at month 14.

Aged is a training ground, not an address. Once you're closing consistently off aged, fresh is where the same skill pays multiples — instant IUL at $15, text-verified FEX at $32, veteran at $40, IUL at $45, mortgage protection at $55, all delivered in real time.

Leo isn't dropping aged now that he's producing. He's adding fresh on top. That's the graduation, not the switch.

So be honest with yourself…

Are you on aged leads because you're building a skill, or because fresh leads would expose one you haven't built?

When was the last time you dialed a lead a fourth time instead of writing it off?

If someone recorded your first three calls tomorrow, what would they hear?

Some hard questions worth sitting with.

FAQ: Spanish IUL Leads and Getting Started

Are Spanish IUL leads worth it if I speak Spanish?
If you speak the language fluently, you have a rapport advantage no script can replicate. Trust builds faster, and in that market referrals compound hard — Leo's clients hand over family members at the close.

Should a new insurance agent buy aged or fresh leads first?
Aged. At $2.50 to $5 a lead you can make every rookie mistake cheaply and build objection handling under pressure. Move to fresh once you're closing consistently off aged.

How much money should I have saved before going full time?
Enough to cover basic living expenses while you build the skill. Leo worked overtime before he quit, sold one policy his first month, and the savings are the only reason he stayed in the business.

Do aged leads mean a dozen agents already called them?
Often not. On 45-to-90-day-old leads, Leo regularly hears "you're the first person who's reached out." Most agents abandon a lead after two or three attempts in the first couple of weeks.

Do I need a dialer to work Spanish leads?
Not to start. Leo tried one and went back to hand dialing. What moves the needle is cadence — morning, afternoon, end of day, then again tomorrow.

The Bottom Line

Leo's upline didn't hold him back by buying him $1 leads. He protected him from burning $1,000 of fresh before he could hold a conversation.

Three months in: one policy, then frozen calls, then $8,700 and climbing in his best month.

Nobody comes in with the talent. You build it on cheap reps and you cash it in on fresh.

It's never the leads. It's always you — and that's the good news, because you can change you.
